How to Pray Using the ACTS Method

Structure your prayer time with Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication

All TraditionsBeginner15 min

The ACTS method is a simple prayer framework that helps you cover the four essential elements of prayer. ACTS stands for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. It gives structure to your prayer time without making it feel scripted.

This method works well for anyone who has ever sat down to pray and felt unsure where to begin. By moving through these four steps, you naturally shift your focus from praising God, to examining your heart, to giving thanks, and finally to presenting your needs. The order matters: starting with adoration lifts your eyes to God before turning inward.

The ACTS method has no set time requirement. You might spend two minutes on each step or twenty. It works for personal prayer, group prayer, and even as a framework for prayer journaling. Many pastors and spiritual directors recommend it as a starting point for people building a prayer habit.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

A: Adoration

Begin by praising God for who He is. This is not about what God has done for you (that comes later in Thanksgiving), but about His character and nature. Praise Him for His holiness, His power, His faithfulness, His love, His wisdom, His creativity. You can use your own words, pray a Psalm of praise, or simply list attributes of God that come to mind. Starting with adoration shifts your perspective and reminds you that you are entering the presence of the Creator of the universe.

Psalm 145:3: "Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable."

2

C: Confession

After praising God, take time to honestly examine your heart. Confess specific sins, failures, and areas where you have fallen short. Be specific rather than general. Instead of "forgive me for sinning," try "forgive me for the harsh words I spoke to my spouse this morning." Confession clears the way for honest communication with God and reminds you of your need for His grace. You can also confess attitudes like pride, selfishness, worry, or ingratitude.

Psalm 51:10: "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."

3

T: Thanksgiving

Now thank God for what He has done. Thank Him for specific blessings: answered prayers, provision, relationships, health, opportunities, lessons learned through difficulty. Thanksgiving is different from adoration because it focuses on God's actions rather than His character. Being specific makes your gratitude more genuine. Some people find it helpful to keep a running list of things they are thankful for and to review it during this step.

Psalm 107:1: "O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever."
