How to Pray the Rosary
A complete step-by-step guide to praying the Rosary with all four sets of mysteries
The Rosary is one of the most beloved prayers in the Catholic tradition. It combines vocal prayer with meditation on key events in the lives of Jesus and Mary, using a set of beads to keep count. Praying the Rosary typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes and can be done alone or in a group.
The word "Rosary" comes from the Latin "rosarium," meaning a garland of roses. Each prayer is considered a spiritual rose offered to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The practice developed gradually during the Middle Ages. Tradition credits St. Dominic (13th century) with receiving the Rosary from the Blessed Virgin Mary, though historians note the devotion evolved over several centuries through the work of many, including the Carthusians and the Dominican preacher Alanus de Rupe in the 15th century. Pope Leo XIII strongly promoted the Rosary and wrote 11 encyclicals on it.
There are four sets of mysteries: the Joyful Mysteries (prayed on Mondays and Saturdays), the Luminous Mysteries (Thursdays), the Sorrowful Mysteries (Tuesdays and Fridays), and the Glorious Mysteries (Wednesdays and Sundays). Each set contains five mysteries, and each mystery is accompanied by one "decade," which is a group of ten Hail Marys. The word "decade" here simply means ten.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Make the Sign of the Cross and pray the Apostles' Creed
Hold the crucifix of your rosary, make the Sign of the Cross, and recite the Apostles' Creed. This profession of faith sets the foundation for your prayer.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
Pray the Our Father
On the first large bead after the crucifix, pray the Our Father. This prayer, taught by Jesus Himself, opens your heart to God the Father.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Pray three Hail Marys
On the next three small beads, pray a Hail Mary on each bead. These are traditionally offered for an increase in faith, hope, and charity.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Pray the Glory Be
After the three Hail Marys, pray the Glory Be (Gloria Patri) to give praise to the Holy Trinity.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Announce the First Mystery and pray the Our Father
Announce the first mystery for the day. For example, on Monday you would say: "The First Joyful Mystery: The Annunciation." Then spend a moment reflecting on this event before praying the Our Father on the next large bead.
Pray ten Hail Marys (one decade)
On each of the ten small beads, pray a Hail Mary while meditating on the mystery. Let your mind dwell on the scene: imagine the people, the setting, and what God is revealing through this event. The repetition of the prayer creates a rhythm that frees your mind to contemplate.
Pray the Glory Be and the Fatima Prayer
After the ten Hail Marys, pray the Glory Be. Many Catholics also add the Fatima Prayer, requested by Our Lady of Fatima in 1917.
O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.
Repeat for the remaining four decades
Continue the pattern: announce the next mystery, pray the Our Father, ten Hail Marys, Glory Be, and Fatima Prayer. Complete all five decades. The Joyful Mysteries are: the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Presentation, and the Finding of Jesus in the Temple. The Luminous Mysteries are: the Baptism of Jesus, the Wedding at Cana, the Proclamation of the Kingdom, the Transfiguration, and the Institution of the Eucharist. The Sorrowful Mysteries are: the Agony in the Garden, the Scourging at the Pillar, the Crowning with Thorns, the Carrying of the Cross, and the Crucifixion. The Glorious Mysteries are: the Resurrection, the Ascension, the Descent of the Holy Spirit, the Assumption of Mary, and the Coronation of Mary.
Pray the Hail Holy Queen and Closing Prayer
After completing all five decades, pray the Hail Holy Queen (Salve Regina), followed by the traditional closing prayer.
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us. And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray. O God, whose Only Begotten Son, by His life, Death, and Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech Thee, that by meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
Make the Sign of the Cross
Conclude the Rosary by making the Sign of the Cross. You may also add your own personal intentions at this time. Some people pray the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary or the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel as an addition.
