How to Pray the Stations of the Cross
Walk with Jesus through the 14 stations of His Passion, from condemnation to burial
The Stations of the Cross (also called the Way of the Cross or Via Crucis) is a devotion that traces Jesus' journey from His condemnation by Pontius Pilate to His burial in the tomb. The practice began with early Christians in Jerusalem who walked the actual route Jesus carried His Cross, now known as the Via Dolorosa.
As Christianity spread beyond the Holy Land, churches began erecting images or plaques representing 14 stations so that the faithful could make a spiritual pilgrimage without traveling to Jerusalem. Today, you will find the 14 Stations displayed in most Catholic churches, and the devotion is practiced by many Anglicans and other Christians as well.
The Stations of the Cross are traditionally prayed during Lent, especially on Fridays, but they can be prayed at any time of year. The devotion typically takes 20 to 30 minutes and can be done individually or as a group. It is a powerful way to enter into the suffering of Christ and to reflect on the depth of His love.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Opening Prayer
Begin the Stations with the Sign of the Cross and an opening prayer. At each station, the traditional versicle is: "We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world." This is said at the beginning of every station before the meditation.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord Jesus Christ, You walked the way of the Cross out of love for me. As I follow Your steps in this devotion, open my heart to understand the depth of Your suffering and the greatness of Your love. Help me to carry my own crosses with faith and trust in You. Amen.
Station 1: Jesus Is Condemned to Death
Pilate washes his hands and hands Jesus over to be crucified. Though innocent, Jesus accepts the unjust sentence in silence. Reflect on the times you have been treated unfairly, or the times you have judged others without mercy.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord Jesus, You were condemned though innocent. Help me to bear injustice with patience and to never condemn others.
Station 2: Jesus Takes Up His Cross
The heavy wooden Cross is placed on Jesus' shoulders. He embraces it willingly, knowing it is the instrument through which the world will be saved. Reflect on the crosses in your own life and how you carry them.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord Jesus, help me to take up my daily cross and follow You without complaint.
Station 3: Jesus Falls the First Time
Weakened by the scourging and the weight of the Cross, Jesus falls to the ground. He gets back up. Reflect on your own falls, your failures, and your ability to rise again with God's help.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord, when I fall under the weight of my struggles, give me the strength to rise again.
Station 4: Jesus Meets His Mother
Mary sees her Son carrying the Cross. Their eyes meet. She cannot take away His suffering, but her presence is a comfort. Reflect on those who stand by you in your suffering, and on those who suffer alone.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Mary, Mother of Sorrows, pray for all who suffer and for those who love them.
Station 5: Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry the Cross
The soldiers compel Simon, a bystander, to help carry the Cross (Mark 15:21). Simon did not volunteer, but by helping Jesus, his life was changed forever. Reflect on how God calls you to help carry the burdens of others.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord, open my eyes to the needs of those around me. Give me the willingness to help, even when it is not convenient.
Station 6: Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus
According to tradition, a woman named Veronica steps out of the crowd and wipes the blood and sweat from Jesus' face with her veil. The image of His face is imprinted on the cloth. Reflect on small acts of kindness and courage in the face of cruelty.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord, give me the courage to act with compassion, even when the crowd is against it.
Station 7: Jesus Falls the Second Time
Jesus falls again under the weight of the Cross. The journey is relentless. Reflect on repeated failures and the temptation to give up. Christ did not stay down.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord, I fall again and again. Help me to never stop getting back up.
Station 8: Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem
Women along the road weep for Jesus. He turns to them and says, "Do not weep for me, but for yourselves and for your children" (Luke 23:28). Even in His suffering, Jesus is concerned for others. Reflect on your capacity for compassion.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord, turn my heart toward others, even in my own suffering.
Station 9: Jesus Falls the Third Time
Jesus falls for the third time, near the top of Calvary. Each fall is harder than the last, yet He rises again. Reflect on perseverance in the face of overwhelming difficulty.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord, when I feel I cannot go on, remind me that You fell three times and still completed the journey.
Station 10: Jesus Is Stripped of His Garments
The soldiers strip Jesus of His clothing and cast lots for His robe (John 19:23-24). He is exposed and humiliated. Reflect on the vulnerability of Christ and on those in our world who are stripped of their dignity.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord, You were stripped of everything. Help me to let go of what I cling to and to find my identity in You alone.
Station 11: Jesus Is Nailed to the Cross
Jesus' hands and feet are nailed to the Cross. He is lifted up before the crowd. In this moment of extreme agony, He prays: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). Reflect on forgiveness.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord, You forgave those who crucified You. Grant me the grace to forgive those who have hurt me.
Station 12: Jesus Dies on the Cross
After three hours of agony, Jesus cries out, "It is finished" (John 19:30), and gives up His spirit. The sky darkens, the earth shakes, and the veil of the Temple is torn in two. Reflect on the enormity of what Christ accomplished by His death.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Station 13: Jesus Is Taken Down from the Cross
Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus take the body of Jesus down from the Cross and place it in His mother's arms. Mary holds her dead Son. Reflect on grief, loss, and the hope that lies beyond death.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord, in my moments of deepest grief, hold me as Mary held You.
Station 14: Jesus Is Laid in the Tomb
The body of Jesus is laid in a borrowed tomb and a great stone is rolled across the entrance (Matthew 27:59-60). It seems like the end, but it is not. Reflect on the hope of the Resurrection. Even in the darkest moments, God is at work.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Lord, even when everything seems finished, I trust that You are preparing a resurrection. Grant me the faith to wait in hope.
Closing Prayer
After completing the 14 stations, conclude with a closing prayer and the Sign of the Cross.
Lord Jesus Christ, You endured the Cross for my sake. Your suffering was the price of my freedom, and Your death was the source of my life. Help me to carry my daily crosses with patience and love. May I always remember what You have done for me, and may Your Passion inspire me to live for You and for others. We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
