What is Good Friday?
Good Friday commemorates the trial, suffering, and death of Jesus on the cross. It is a day of fasting and quiet in much of the Church, often marked by afternoon services recalling the hours of the crucifixion.
It is called good in the older sense of holy. The day looks unflinchingly at the cross before the joy of Easter Sunday.
How to observe Good Friday
Many Christians keep the day simply: fasting, attending a service, or reading the Passion narratives from the Gospels.
A traditional practice is to set aside quiet time between noon and three, the hours Jesus hung on the cross. It is a day for reflection rather than celebration.
