What is Lent?
Lent recalls the forty days Jesus spent praying and fasting in the wilderness. It runs from Ash Wednesday to the evening of Holy Thursday and is marked by repentance, simpler living, and a return to prayer.
The date shifts each year because it is counted backward from Easter. Ash Wednesday always falls 46 days before Easter Sunday.
How to prepare for Lent
Many people decide before Ash Wednesday what they will take up or give up for the season. A daily prayer rhythm, a Scripture reading plan, and a concrete act of generosity are classic starting points.
Choosing one small, steady practice tends to last longer than an ambitious one. The goal is not to do everything but to make room for God over six focused weeks.
